Edmund Chummery, better known as Chum Chum, is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Fanboy) in Nickelodeon animated television series of the same name. He is Fanboy's best friend and sidekick.
He is voiced by Nika Futterman.
Biography
His family comes from the tribe known as "Chulks" from the country of Chulkistan. His cousins and "Chuncle" Joe are Chulks just like him. Chum Chum currently lives and has lots of fun as a roommate with Fanboy.
Personality
He is depicted as sweet, kind and childlike. He is very optimistic and believes in the good of certain things. Because of his innocent nature and small size, some characters are charmed by him most notably Yo.
He finds joy in the simplest of things such as getting excited about a bounce house in "I, Fanbot" or a plastic bubble in "Fanboy in the Plastic Bubble".
Chum Chum is very nice and innocent, and very rarely acts openly mean-spirited to anyone, even to those who find him an annoyance and act cruelly to him. He is a very selfless person, especially toward those close to him. His selfless nature is most notably shown in "The Tell-Tale Toy" as he accepts Fanboy for who he is despite his history of breaking his toys. He is also loyal and will always stand up for Fanboy or his other friends no matter what.
In comparison to Fanboy, Chum Chum is usually the more nice, mellow and "less intense" of the two, though he still acts quite energetic.
Chum Chum is shown to be smarter than Fanboy and points out the stronger concept than what he said. In "Precious Pig" he points out why Fanboy teaching animals tricks may not be a good idea due to Fanboy often unintentionally harming animals in the past.
Chum Chum is also shown to be more mature than Fanboy. He usually stays calm during difficult situations, understands the feelings of others, shows respect for others, even those with different opinions and doesn’t hold grudges.
He can be very focused and attentive when he needs to be. In "Fan-bidextrous" he is able to stay still and quiet while taking a pop quiz and doesn’t get distracted by the noise going in around him.
He has the ability to stay regulated to match his energy to the situation, whether it’s playing or taking care of a class pet.
Despite being the smarter one of the two, he can be very gullible, forgetful and foolish at times. In "Trading Day" he believes Fanboy's lie about going to space. Though usually his naivety comes from being softhearted and pure.
He is shown to be rather sensitive and dislikes when others make fun of him or his friends. In "The Incredible Chulk" after Chum Chum stands up to Boog, he gets threatened causing him to whimper.
He has a bit of a soft side as he acts innocent and tenderhearted, loves things like ponies, flowers, sparkles, rubber duckies and teddy bears, and wears bright colors. However he also has a boyish side such as playing in the mud and loves action figures, comics and sports.
Chum Chum is quite creative in his problem solving. In "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha" he spends most his time at the kindergarten by making an airplane out of ice cream sticks in order to save Fanboy from Marsha.
He is also loyal and will always stand up for Fanboy or his other friends no matter what.
He is shown to love and care deeply about animals as shown in "Digital Pet Cemetery" and "Precious Pig".
He shown to be very forgiving such as whenever Yo tries to kidnap him or when Fanboy accidentally broke his toys when younger, Chum Chum doesn't hold a grudge and still enjoys hanging out with them.
Despite being very nice and caring, sometimes he acts a bit rude and self-centered. In "Battle of the Stands" he and Fanboy trick people with cuteness in order to get money. Another example is in "Boog Zapper" when he breaks Oz’s touch screen and menacingly tells him to leave.
He is sometimes helpless in danger and usually needs Fanboy or another character to save him. An example of this is in "Saving Private Chum Chum" when his teacher, Mr. Mufflin mistakes him for a toy and gets locked in a drawer. Despite often being vulnerable in "Brain Freeze" he and Fanboy manage to save day by defeating an ice monster with super powers.
He is shown to be able to have no problem with handling 5th grade despite being younger. In "Norse-ing Around" he surpasses all of his classmates as he has 5 gold stars and only being behind Kyle who has 6. He also doesn’t get confused when seeing 5th grade problems or Mr. Muffin talks about them.
Even though some of the citizens often treat him poorly, he usually doesn’t let their selfishness make him miserable and is able to remain positive.
He occasionally playfully teases others most notably Boog and sometimes Hank. Examples of this include "Chimp Chomp Chumps", "Fanboy in the Plastic Bubble", "Separation Anxiety", "A Bopwork Orange", "Champ of Chomp" and "Funny Face".
Earlier episodes showed him not being too experienced with technology as evidence in "Digital Pet Cemetery" where Chum Chum thinks Yo has a "cat egg" and many episodes showing him only getting 3 points at Chimp Chump. In "Hex Games" he is more advanced with playing video games as he’s able to remember complex commands.
As a toddler he retains most of his personality he has as an older kid though he is a bit more naive as seen. In "Fan vs. Wild" during the scene where he meets Fanboy he unintentionally pokes Fanboy's eye. In "Back From The Future" he and Fanboy try to find the library to learn how to read and at one point mistakes Dollarnator as a mailbox. In "Buddy Up" during the flashback he wanders off causing him to be at risk at getting injured. Despite this, as a toddler he is very smart at that age as he quickly notices certain things, asks for help when he's trying to find something, is able to talk in full sentences, use slightly complex vocabulary, understands what funerals are about, the consequences of being mean and is able to fight a full grown bear.
